share printer on network
You have more than one computer in your home don't you? Just because you have multiple computers doesn't mean that you need multiple printers as well! Sharing your printer(s) between computers is a great way to save some money and save yourself the headache and hassle of managing multiple overpriced inks! Does this mean that you have to plug your laptop into the printer to use it? No! Thank God! There is a much easier way. I will show you how so let's dive in!
In this tutorial, I will be assuming that you have a desktop PC and a laptop as this is the most common situation that I run into at work. If you have more than this, then simply repeat the steps on each machine and you are good to go!
On Windows XP
To open the Printers and Faxes folder:
- Click Start-->Control Panel
- Click Printers and Other Hardware-->then click Printers and Faxes
- In the Printers and Faxes folder, click on your printer and on task pane (left hand column)-->click Share this Printer
- Open your printers Properties dialog box by right-clicking it and selecting Properties-->click on the Sharing tab
- Click Share Name-->and then click Ok.
You have just now made your printer available to any machine on your network. Sounds impressive doesn't it? It is! Let's get your other computers seeing the printer. We are about done!
- Open Control Panel-->click Printers and Other Hardware
- Click Add a Printer
- Click on Printer Connection and then find your printer!
That is it! You are done! Easy-peasy huh? You have now mastered this simple task and you should feel good about yourself! I get asked this question at least once every day, and as our lives become increasingly connected knowing how to do things like this will only benefit us! I hope that I was able to help! Remember to hug a Geek! Some of us are good luck charms!
